The HP Photosmart C4280 is a low-cost and entry-level all-in-one printer that offers very basic features, varying speed of tasks, and mediocre print quality. We found frustrating feature limits, even for a $ 100 printer; other all-in-one priced printers offer a wider set of features. For the same $ 100, you can get an all-in-one that offers more features and faster speeds. We really like the Canon Pixma MP460 - even though it costs about $ 30 more, you'll get a lot of bang for your buck.
Design
The design of the
HP Photosmart C4280 is minimalist. The body is white and gray-shaped box and measures 17.1 inches wide by 11.4 inches by 6.4 inches tall. Close the scanner hides the A4 size flat scanner. The front of the open folds to serve as input and output trays. The paper guide wraps the input sheet, and the printed pages just fall on the paper of the input tray. The extension arm is thrown out of the tray to capture printed sheets when released from the printer. Since there is only one input tray, you must swap media if you want to print on a different type of paper.
Four memory card slots adorn the front of the printer, but the C4280 lacks a PictBridge-enabled USB port. The control panel consists of a simple row of buttons, a small 1.5-inch LCD preview, and a small icon panel. The first set of buttons allows you to change the quality, size, and number of copies of copies (one to nine copies). The second set of buttons starts scanning, color copy, or mono duty. The control panel is almost too simple, as it limits the number of things you can do in standalone mode (see the Features section). The LCD preview is embedded in the control panel and can not be adjusted, so you might find it stretching to capture a good angle.

The Photosmart C4280 uses a two tank system. For regular printing, you only use black cartridges and three-color cartridges. When printing photos, you can swap black cartridges for the secondary tri-color photo cartridge to print six-color photos. Black and tricolor cartridges are offered in standard and high-capacity versions (XL). The standard black price is $ 15 and is expected to produce 200 pages, at a cost per page of 7.5 cents. The XL version costs $ 30 and prints about 750 pages, at a price of 4 cents per page. The regular color cartridge costs $ 18 and prints about 170 pages at a cost per page of 18.1 cents for full color (tricolor plus black). XL color cartridges cost $ 35 for 520 pages or 10.7 cents per page. Of course, if you print a bit on a regular basis, you should select the XL version. The XL cost makes sense for the printer at this price point.
Features
The Photosmart C4280 offers a very basic feature for an all-in-one printer. When printing photos from a memory card, your only option is to manually enter your card contents to select an image. You can not do a select-all or sort by date range, and you also can not edit photos. You can change the image quality (from one star to three stars), select the borderless option, and change the number of copies (up to nine). We noticed that LCD previews can slowly display the next image when you click, which is a bit frustrating. The small size of the screen also makes previewing images hard to see, which can bother you when trying to select two versions of the same image before printing. All-in-one photo printers that can be sold comparable to Canon Pixma MP180 and Lexmark X5470 offer the ability to print printable proof sheets that make batch printing easy.
When doing a photocopy, you can change the output quality and produce up to nine copies. When setting the size, your selection is limited to the original size, resize to fit the paper in question, and borderless copies. You can not manually measure or make copies of re-drawings or N-ups. If you scan a document or image, you can initiate it from the PC or the printer itself. When performing the latter, the HP Photosmart Essential software appears. Here, you can edit images in various ways. Unfortunately, there is no way to convert the file to a different format (automatically saved as GIF). However, you can share photos or documents from the HP software.
Performance
The speed of the HP Photosmart C4280 task ranges from very slow to fast. It creates text prints quickly, printing 5.94 pages per minute. Of a comparable competitor, only the Lexmark X5470 beat it, with a score of 6.9 ppm. HP is the slowest of any number with printed color graphics, but not much at 1.50ppm. It prints 4x6 photos at a speed of 0.67 ppm, parallel to Lexmark but two
