Photosmart 1315 is the latest printer in the Photosmart range. It is compatible with many digital media cards and can manage printing with LCD display. But, this is more expensive and much slower on the text than the older brother, the Photosmart 1215. Moreover, the picture is lower than what we get on other printers that are cheaper. However, most bitter photographers may be tempted by the many excellent features and graphics of this machine.
Like other HP photo printers,
Photosmart 1315 has a thin and round base. The color (gray, silver and blue) gives a rather industrial look. It measures 45 x 19.5 x 36.8 centimeters. An easy installation guide takes you from unpacking to the installation in minutes. The printer CD includes drivers for Windows 98, Me, 2000, and XP, as well as for Mac OS 8.6 and later. The CD also installs some basic HP utilities, including Photo Printing, Photo Imaging, and Share-to-Web. This tool is enough to get started, but for more serious photo jobs you need a more complete application.
PhotoSmart 1315 is expensive, especially since the amount of media received and 2.5-inch LCD on the front panel. If you calculate in addition to its ability in connection and compatible media, Photosmart 1315 offers you for your money. If you are printing from a PC or Mac, you can connect the printer via a parallel port or USB (you must provide the cable itself). The Infrared port (IrDA) lets you transmit text and graphics from a laptop without using a cable.
If you prefer to print directly from a digital card, Photosmart 1315 is compatible with CompactFlash cards (Type I and Type II), SmartMedia and Sony Memory Stick through three different card slots. The printer also allows the use of all types of paper media, including banners, envelopes, transparencies and labels, in various amounts. It has an automatic sensor that identifies the paper type, so you do not have to tell yourself which media you're using.
Direct printing
You can print directly with Photosmart 1315 from your digital device card without connecting to PC. Just insert the card into the correct slot and scroll the photo on the LCD. The control panel (located below the LCD screen) maintains common printing functions (margins, paper type, etc.) but also lets you crop, rotate, adjust brightness of the image, to select visual effects (black and white, sepia atmosphere or old photo. ..)
You can select the tray you want to print: a 100 sheet tray under the feed tray in front of the machine (single paper and other media) or a 20 sheet tray for 10x15 photos. That said, for a stronger overview and more powerful editing tools, you need to connect Photosmart 1315 to your computer.
Fast speed but average quality
In our lab tests, Photosmart 1315 is faster than previous printers in this range. We printed our test photos (format 21x29 at 2400x1200 dpi) in 4.4 minutes. This is much faster than the 6.5 minutes required by Photosmart 1215 for the same image. Canon S800 is slightly faster (4.3 minutes) but with a much lower resolution. The Photosmart 1315 even does well in text printing, with 3.2 pages per minute (ppm). This is well below the official speed determined by the manufacturer (6.5 ppm in Normal mode) and slower than 3.9 ppm from Photosmart 1215. But it's still faster than Canon S800 and Kodak Personal Picture Maker 200, respectively 2.2 ppm and 2 ppm.
The print quality from Photosmart 1315 does not match the speed. This is average compared to other printers whose photos are cheaper. Unfortunately, it was the printing of Photosmart photos that disappointed us most. Our photo tests, printed with default settings on Glossy Photo Premium Glossy Photo Glossy Glossy Photo, are dark and over saturated, with red dominance and unsatisfactory meat color. But enlightened fans who use graphics-editing software or programs (such as Adobe Photoshop 6.0) will have no trouble organizing their photos. The texts are fun both on simple paper and treated paper, though some parasites. The Photosmart 1315 has been completely illustrated in graphic documents, with excellent colors, precise details, fine lines and smooth gradations.
